"Thomson demonstrates that rare type of dedication to authenticity, focusing inwards to find the right balance of sound and spirit and delivering it outwards with passion and care.”

What People Are Saying

“Amsterdam based songstress Marle Thomson received thunderous reviews for her debut THE CANOPY. Rightly so. 'Soulful Space Pop,' like she calls her own sound is enchantingly beautiful.”

— Elle Magazine

“Beautiful songs that might as well have been from Lianne La Havas or Beyoncé’.”

— 3voor12

“You hear it immediately; this is a great talent. (...) A singer with poignant lyrics who accompanies herself inventively and who can add all kinds of subtleties with her voice. A beautiful debut.”

— Jazzism

“It’s Thomson’s vocal which holds together the gentle finger-picking of the acoustic guitar and stellar pads. Harmonically rich and delicately crafted, “Satellites” has the feeling stargazing at midnight.”

— Guestlist (UK)

She can do it all, open-minded and anti-coquettish. Her music is timeless and, no less important, very worthwhile.

Marle Thomson by Jaap Kroon

Marle Thomson is a story teller. Personal stories that are universal at the same time and therefore very recognizable. Her songs deal with themes such as the courage to show vulnerability, the processing of loss, self-acceptance and the courage to let go, without becoming heavy. There is always hope and room for a new beginning. Her voice and songs contain deep layering, a mix of strength and fragility. Or a so-called "saudade" a sense of desire and melancholy, which her audience is touched by.

Thomson stepped into the spotlight in 2016 with striking performances and a critically exclaimed EP ‘The Canopy’ followed by a full debut album in the spring of 2017 (‘The Canopy - Acoustic’), with the self-produced single ‘Satellites’. This single was immediately picked up by international blogs such as Music Week (UK), Guestlist (UK) and Clash Magazine (UK). In addition to radio and TV appearances, Marle toured throughout The Netherlands. She also traveled to London to perform and write, and collaborated with various fashion designers during the Amsterdam Fashion Week, for which she wrote the music for one of the runway shows. Marle was a support act for the Ruben Hein club tour and recorded a duet with Typhoon, both well-known Dutch artists. ELLE Magazine named Marle: ‘Sound or 2017: power woman you cannot miss.’

In 2019, Dutch songwriter Odelion and Marle joined forces and released a co-written melancholic folk song called ‘Keep On’, while Marle kept on working on new songs for her next upcoming EP.

The first single of the new EP ‘Shapes’ was released on January 17, 2020 at Amsterdam-based label TCBYML and well-received. The song ‘Expectations’ was added to several playlists like New Music Friday NL, Beautiful Day, The Pop Lounge, Annemieke’s A-Lijst (Radio 2), Basyl Nieuw 2020 (Radio 2), Vrijdag de 13 van Rob Stenders and New Music Daily, with airplay in The Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, France, Sweden, UK, Ireland and the US. The song is about the expectations we impose on ourselves and others. The animated lyrics video premiered on Harper’s Bazaar.com. ‘Expectations’ was followed by ‘Castles’, ‘All Is Not Lost’, ‘Surf Rising’ and ‘Hearts’. Marnix Dorrestein produced the first three songs, Darius Timmer co-produced Surf Rising and Rory Ronde produced ‘Hearts’ together with Marle.

On August 14 2020 - about a week before giving birth to her daughter - ‘Shapes’ was released with 5 tracks + 2 bonus tracks, followed up by a self-produced Christmas song ‘You Are Here’ in December.

During the first and seconds lockdowns in the Netherlands Marle released her so-called ‘stay-at-home sessions’ singles, recording all time classics like ‘What The World Needs Now’, ‘Close to You’ and ‘I Will’ in an intimate acoustic setting, together with Hugo den Oudsten.

At the start of 2021 Marle got in touch with Italian singer-songwriter Anthony Lazaro who asked her to write together. This resulted in a summerly bossa song called ‘You’re Like A Song’, that was released on July 16 2021 and very well received.

Meanwhile Marle worked on a new cinematic song, called ‘The Games’ which she wrote and produced in collaboration with Amsterdam based multi-instrumentalist and producer Marnix Dorrestein (IX). The song, that is about facing and fighting your own fears, has a James Bond-esque atmosphere and beside the produced version of the song, Marle also recorded an acoustic guitar version. The video for the acoustic version and the cover photo’s for both versions were shot in collaboration with the famous Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam by Monika Vaskorova.
The Games was released on November 26 2021 and The Games (Acoustic) on December 10 2021.

Based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands Marle Thomson is a singer and songwriter, influenced by indie folk pop, r&b and jazz.
